Born in July 1970, Lillehammer, Norway. Introduced to jazz by his American father before he reached his teenage years, Young took up the guitar and developed an interestingly eclectic repertoire that draws from the traditions of both Norway and America. After studying music at the University of Oslo, he was awarded a scholarship to study at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. During this period of study, he was tutored in guitar by Jim Hall and John Abercrombie, and in composition by Kenny Werner and Richie Beirach. After graduating in 1993, Young freelanced for a while, working with artists such as Junior Mance, Larry Goldings, Rashied Ali, and Abercrombie.

In 1995, Young returned to Norway and since that time, he has remained based in Oslo while touring extensively in Scandinavia. In 2002, he was leading JYB (the Jacob Young Band), which included Jon Christensen. His appearance on the same year’s Where Flamingos Fly with Karin Krog attracted considerable approving international attention. (NB: this artist should not be confused with the similarly named US pop and rock singer.)
